High tea

February 15, 2009

dsc_71020277 I was invited to attend High Tea this afternoon. It was held at High SocieTea in Wayne, NJ.   Entering the shop, one is greeted by a large array of tea pots, cups, and related tea paraphernalia.  The dining area boasts an eclectic mix of furniture.  Each place setting has a teacup, saucer and plate.  While each setting matched, none of the settings on the table matched each other.  I wonder who is responsible for putting the matching pieces together after washing them.

The women at the tea today are part of one of the NY Avon Walk teams, Loretta’s Ladies.  They are named in memory of their friend, Loretta Gaffney, who  lost her battle with cancer last year.

We were given a tea menu which listed a wide variety of teas.  In addition, our hostess passed around 4 small cups of tea leaves which we were able to sniff.  One called Hawaii, is a  tropical fruit paradise of apples, pineapple, rosehips, orange peels, and a hint of beets.  It definitely had a fruity scent.  I choose Taste of Blarney, a full-bodied blend of Assam and Ceylon Black Teas.

Each teapot arrived in a tea cozy which matched our individual place setting.  Then, the hostess brought out cranberry apricot scones with small pots of clotted cream and lemon curd.  There were small tea sandwiches on bread which had had the crust removed and slices of fruit.  There was a plate with Brownies,  Lemon Bars and other sweets.  To top it off, there was a dessert course where one could choose between a white choclate cake, chocolate cake and peach melaba with ice cream… as if one could choose.

To make this a very decedant Sunday afternoon, I met my sister for a mani-pedi.  I could definitely get used to this type of self-indulgence.
